Akshay Kumar movie Chandni Chowk to China released last week amid a lot of hype and expectations. Although, the hype did give the movie some advantage, overall it’s been a sad performer. The movie grossed close to Rs.33 crores ($7m) during the weekend at the domestic box office.
One thing that will work for the movie is that the producers include Warner Brothers. The film got released in almost 50 markets in North America with over 1400 prints globally, which is a record for a Bollywood film. The producers have a target of more than Rs.100 crores for the movie, which fell shy of Rs.12 crores from the weekend collection of Singh Is Kinng.
“The movie is comparable to SRK’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, but cannot be compared with the success of Singh is Kinng and Ghajini at the domestic box office,” said a senior executive with a leading cinema chain.
Chandni Chowk to China, or CC2C, has been critically attacked for it’s weak content and poor storyline. It is the first kung-fu comedy to be made in India, but it is not that entertaining as Akshay’s previous releases have been.
