Bollywood blockbuster Ghajini has done what many had thought but a few had expected. The movie has now earned more than Rs.200 crores ($40m) and has become the highest earner in Bollywood in just two weeks! Ghajini is expected to break the all-time records in the long run.
“The film was very strong from Day 1. It has been galloping like a one-horse race and, in my estimate, it will cross the Rs-250-crore (gross) mark very easily,” trade consultant Amod Mehra said.
Producer Madhu Mantena is obviously cheerful and said that he was ‘overawed’ with the results. His movie has now overtook Gadar-Ek Prem Katha and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge in domestic earnings. With the UK release just happening, it’s catching up on the overseas part also.
Considering the economics, the movie made Rs.4 crores from the video game rights, Rs.21 crores from satellite TV rights and Rs.10 crores from home video and music rights.
According to some people, the success of the movie has other reasons also.
“In the last year alone, there has been a 40% increase in cinema screens and also a rise in the cinema-going population, especially in the age group of 18-35. With most of the theatres recording good numbers on Ghajini, the Rs-200-crore mark is hardly a surprise,” producer Punkej Kharbanda said.
Ghajini was released with almost 1200 prints in the country.
