Right Bollywood congratulates Miss China Zhang Zilin on winning the Miss World 2007 title at an event held in the tropical city of Sanya, China.
Miss World is the most desired title for any girl in the world.. and winning it in front of your own countrymen makes it even more special.
What’s more?? She is the first Chinese girl to win the coveted crown!
So, how does she feels about it?
“There are 1.3 billion people behind me. I want to become a link between the Olympic Games [to be held in Beijing next year] and the Miss World Organisation.”
“I want to use the power and beauty of Miss World to support those in need,” she said, speaking throughout in hesitant English, adding a few words in Chinese.
China gave a cheer to its first Miss World on Sunday, with Internet chat rooms filled with praise for the 23-year-old beauty queen. A blog by Zhang on the Web portal Sina.com had over 1 million hits as of Sunday, with many fans posting their congratulations.
A business administration graduate and part-time model, Zhang is one of the thousands of young Chinese women who were inspired to enter beauty pageants after Miss World came to Sanya in 2002.
“When I was 18, I watched Miss World when it was first held in China and I thought it was fantastic. I knew then I wanted to be part of it.
Miss World is very famous in China. I think deep down a lot of girls would like to take part in it,” said Miss Zhang, who at 182 cms (5ft 11 and a half inches) was the tallest of this year’s contestants.
Miss Angola Micaela Reis was the first runner-up and pre-event favourite Miss Mexico Carolina Moran Gordillo came in second.
Miss India World Sarah Jane Dias couldn’t emulate the recent success of Pantaloons Femina Miss India Earth Pooja Chitgopekar, who was the first runner-up at this year’s Miss Earth pageant.
The program included messages aimed at increasing public awareness of the dangers of AIDS and HIV, in honor of World AIDS Day.
