The premier of the much awaited movie, The last Lear, has been called off due to the protests by a local political party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena supporters. It was scheduled on Wednesday night.
“Yes, the Mumbai premiere has been cancelled but now we plan to have a grand affair in Delhi,” said a well-placed source in Planman Motion Pictures, the production house of the film.
The reason behind the protests has been some remarks made by Jaya Bachchan, the wife of Amitabh Bachchan, over the use of Marathi during a recent function. Raj Thackerey, the head of the political party, apparently asked her top take back her words and issue a public apology.
Although, Jaya did issue an apology in a local newspaper, Raj is yet to be convinced. Movie’s producer Arindam Chaudhary and director Rituparno Ghosh called a press conference today and asked Raj to close the matter in a polite way so that the beautiful movie can be released on Friday.
The Last Lear initially premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9 last year and earned scores of accolades due to the beautiful script and the classic performance by Amitabh. It was later shown at the London Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of India in Goa.
The movie stars Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal and Divya Dutta among others.
