Apart from Mumbai, any other place which Bollywood can call home is certainly Delhi. With more movies being shot in the Capital, it was a visible mark on every star’s itinerary in 2007.
So… what’s going on??
Kareena Kapoor, Malaika Arora and Shilpa Shetty came and danced at weddings, Aamir launched his first directorial venture and celebs like Salman Khan and John Abraham visiting almost every week for shoots.
Look at the ‘Made in Delhi’ movies list and you will find at least five movies shot in Delhi. Aamir’s Delhi Belly will be shot entirely in Delhi this year.
“Shooting in Delhi can be real tough because you have to take permission from seven different government offices but I love the ambience of the city. My current film is my third to be shot here,” says Anurag Kashyap Kohli, director of Fanaa(2006).
The men who made these films say the inspiration to use Delhi as the backdrop for their stories stemmed from their love for the city they grew up in.
“You can only give back what you have taken and for me Delhi is where I know a lot of things. Besides it’s a beautiful city and a wonderful shooting location,” director of Rang de Basanti, Rakeysh Mehra says.
Even the producers and distributors agree that Delhi has emerged as an extremely important film market after Mumbai. And with Mumbai getting saturated with increased film activities… Delhi might give it a run for money in future.
With its now frequent appearances on celluloid, perhaps Delhi will go on to find a distinct place in Indian cinema like filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s Calcutta of the 60s, a city made world famous and immortalized by his films.
