A woman sends an all caps email to co-workers and gets herself fired! Oh brother. Read more about this wacky story below.
A woman in Auckland, New Zealand has been awarded NZD $17,000 (US $11,500) after being unjustly fired from her accountant position after sending an email to co-workers in all caps.
Vicki Walker was fired without warning. She simply sent an email to her fellow co-workers instructing them how to fill out staff claim forms. The body of the email was bolded, red and in all caps. Oh, the travesty! This is how the email read:
“TO ENSURE YOUR STAFF CLAIM IS PROCESSED AND PAID, PLEASE DO FOLLOW THE BELOW CHECKLIST.”
Walker was a financial controller for ProCare Health, and was fired in December 2007 after having been with the company for two years. The company felt that the email was too confrontational.
Because of the firing, she had to take out a second mortgage on her home due to lost wages. She said:
“I am a single woman with a mortgage, and I had to re-mortgage my home and borrow money from my sister to make it through. They nearly ruined my life.”
Walker plans to appeal to the Employment Relations Authority, in order to receive further compensation.
What do you think of this woman who sent an all caps email and got fired for doing so? Do you agree that she was wrongly terminated? Leave me a comment below, would love to hear your thoughts!
