Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos stunned Gina Carano and many MMA fans Saturday at the HP Pavillion in San Jose, California. Cyborg and Carano both came out with quick punches, but it was clear from the beginning that Cyborg was the stronger of the two. It was a fast paced fight, with Cyborg not allowing Carano any time to recover and catch her breath. With one second left in the first round, referee Josh Rosenthal stopped the fight at the 4:59 mark.

“Once I got at that point, I felt it was time to finish the fight,” Santos said. “I felt my punches getting harder. Tendances de la mode I felt Gina close her guard, and I went for strong punches.”

Carano’s trainer, Randy Couture said:

“Cyborg’s a very aggressive opponent, came out, went after her. We knew that was gonna happen; we prepared for that. We did a lot of good things in the fight, but ultimately we got caught in a bad position.”

With Cyborg’s win, is she now the face of women’s MMA? There was much hype regarding Carano, with her pretty face appearing on magazine covers and making the rounds on the late night talk show circuit. Mode In May of 2009 she was ranked #16 in Maxim’s Hot 100 list. It will be interesting to see what happens now, given everything that Strikeforce did to promote this fight or, er, Gina.
