Bollywood star Aamir Khan is all set to make his Hollywood debut with Kate Winslet in director Pan Nalin’s next untitled movie. Although Kate is the front-runner for the role opposite Khan, another British actress, Rachel Weisz, is also said to be in the running.
This will be Aamir’s first Hollywood project. Sources say that the film will be based on Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Manto’s short story ‘Toba Tek Singh’. Aamir will be playing the role of a mentally unstable person.
It tells the tale of a mental patient Bishan Singh, who belongs to the town of Toba Tek Singh. After the 1947 partition, when the governments of India and Pakistan decide to exchange their Muslim, Sikh and Hindu lunatics, the drama that unravels forms the base of the story. It’s a powerful satire.
Aamir is currently in Cannes and is said to be very busy to start the movie, so we are not expecting any official announcements any soon. Irrfan Khan is also in the talks for a role, which really didn’t surprise me as I can hardly remember any good sub-continental based Hollywood movies in which Irrfan didn’t act.
“Either Kate or Rachel will be doing my film. I will be meeting both of them after my Cannes trip to finalize the casting. Either of them will be able to do justice to this marvelous story,” said Nalin.
Director Pan Nalin is one of the much-acclaimed filmmakers in Hollywood. He is known for making Samsara, a 2001 Buddhism based movie which got the ‘Most Popular Movie’ award during the 51st Melbourne International Film Festival.
